Choosing the right field
All eighteen, in plain English, with what each is actually for.
When you add a field you pick a type. Here is the whole list and what each is good for.
Words
- Text — one line. Names, headlines, prices written as words.
- Text area — several lines, no formatting. Summaries, short descriptions.
- Rich text — the full writing box with headings, bold, lists and links. Your main body copy.
- Markdown — for people who prefer to type their formatting.
Numbers and choices
- Number — prices, quantities, capacities. Can have a minimum and maximum.
- Yes or no — in stock, featured, sold out.
- Select — one from a list you write.
- Multi-select — several from a list you write. Allergens, tags, features.
Dates
- Date — a day.
- Date and time — a moment. Event start times.
Pictures and links
- Image — one picture from your library.
- Gallery — several pictures, in an order you choose.
- Reference — a link to another entry. A product pointing at its category; a post at its author. You choose which kind it can point at, and Inkling enforces it.
The specialist ones
- List — a repeater. One field that holds many little groups of fields: a list of opening hours, a set of features each with a title and description. Lists can contain lists.
- Colour — a colour picker.
- Link and Email address — text boxes that check the shape of what you typed.
- JSON — an escape hatch for a shape nothing else fits. If you are not sure, you do not need it.
