Turning the assistant on
Inkling has an assistant. It is off until you connect an account.
Nothing in Inkling mentions AI until you switch it on, and nothing is sent anywhere until you do. If you never want it, skip this chapter entirely — everything else works exactly the same.
To turn it on, go to AI in the sidebar, open Providers, and connect one. You will need an account with whoever you choose, and it is your account that gets billed.
Which to choose
- Claude — the recommended one, and what the assistant is tuned against.
- OpenAI — works well.
- Ollama — runs on your own machine, so nothing leaves your building. Slower, and quality varies.
- Ollama Cloud — the same models, hosted.
Paste in the key your provider gives you. It is encrypted before it is stored, never shown again, and never sent back out by Inkling — you will only ever see its last four characters, so you can tell two apart.
