Writing your first page

From an empty screen to something live on your website, in about two minutes.

Writing your first page, start to finish.

Pick the kind of thing you want to make from the Content group in the sidebar — Pages, say — and press + New in the top right.

  1. Give it a title. Type into the big box at the top. Underneath, a short version of the title appears in grey — that is the slug, the part that ends up in the web address. It is written for you and you can almost always leave it alone.
  2. Fill in the fields. What you see depends on what your site holds. A page might want a summary and a body; a product might want a price and a photo. A red dot beside a label means that one is required.
  3. Press Save. The button is in the top right. Nothing is lost after this point.
  4. Press Publish now. It appears in the Publishing panel on the right after you save.

The writing box

The body field has a small row of buttons above it: paragraph and heading levels, bold, italic, bullet and numbered lists, a quote, a picture, and a horizontal rule. There are undo and redo arrows, and a box for pasting a link.

To make a link, select the words you want to be clickable first, then paste the address into the link box. Pasting from Word or a web page is safe — the formatting is cleaned up on the way in, so you will not accidentally import someone else's fonts.

The arrows at the far right expand the box to fill the screen, which is worth knowing about for anything long.
